CLAT PG 2025 is one of the most reputed examinations for pursuing a masters or to be part of PSUs. Many students prepare for CLAT PG every year. Some students prepare throughout and some start at the last moment but it is important to understand which type of preparation strategy is best and what method should be adopted by the students so that chances of succeeding are maximum. In this article, I will tell you with my personal experience about everything related to the CLAT PG examination that you need to know to begin preparing for CLAT PG.
Before starting your preparation, there are some basic things that you need to know that will help you with your preparation. I will list all the things, so it is useful for you in upcoming exams.
The checklist before starting CLAT PG preparation:
If you look at the CLAT PG examination syllabus, you will find that it contains almost everything you have already read in your undergraduate course. It might become overwhelming for you to revise everything effectively. You may find yourself in trouble that you have forgotten most of the things and revision will take a lot of time. You will be worried about yourself after looking into the syllabus. But let me cut to the chase, not everything you read in undergraduate will appear helpful in the CLAT PG examination. Therefore, knowing the syllabus becomes essential.
Reading only the important and leaving the less important aspects in this syllabus will be helpful for you. So, I will tell you two most important aspect of syllabus which will help you cover 80% of questions in the examination. First, Constitution and Second, Jurisprudence. Believe me, learning both of these subjects covers you most of the part for your CLAT PG examination. However, I will in next sections discuss, how you can effectively figure out which questions will appear from other subjects so you can effectively prepare for that too.
Solving the previous year’s question paper is a pre-requisite as it will tell you where you are standing now and where you need to be, to assess the amount and time required for you to prepare.
Solving the previous year’s question, not only helps you understand your current status but also helps you understand the exam pattern. A good student will know everything about exam before starting to prepare for it. As it is saying that “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
Your strengths and weaknesses are something that you can assess by yourself. You know the subjects where you can score high with less effort and there are subjects where you need some effort to reach a decent score. After you examine your strengths and weaknesses, you can begin your preparation where you can focus more on the subject where you need improvement.
Consistency is the key to any kind of preparation. You need to dedicate a specific amount of time daily to preparation for the CLAT PG examination. First, you need to build a routine that matches your daily activities. For instance, if you’re in college and have to do assignments projects and 10 other things. This can become hectic in your preparation journey. Therefore, having such a routine that does not make you feel burnt out is necessary.
You need to give specific time to preparation so that you have time for other necessary activities. I won’t be dealing with routine specifically in this post, as you need to build your custom routine according to your requirements, if you have a specific query related to it. These are all the prerequisites that are necessary before starting the preparation. When all these steps are completed you can move to the main strategy which will be discussed in the next section of this article.
In this section, we will discuss all the main strategies necessary for you to crack the CLAT PG examination. I believe you have already read the earlier step and moved step by step with me. So, without further ado, let’s move to the main discussion.
So, two kinds of students prepare for CLAT PG. First, those who seek to get a good college for their master’s degree and second, those who seek to pursue a job in PSUs. For both kinds of students, the preparation strategy would be the same. However, the criterion for getting good PSUs lies in the fact that you are able to score a good rank (between ranks 1-150).
The first thing that you need to start doing for preparation of CLAT PG is to focus on core areas. The core areas include Constitution and Jurisprudence. These are the foundational areas where you need to focus first and foremost. I will tell you how to read both subjects and what strategies for different subjects will be. So, the next section will deal with preparation of core areas.
The core area includes constitutional law and Jurisprudence. Both these subjects require different strategies for preparation. I will deal with each one separately so that you can gain control over the core area.
You can build strength over Constitutional Law by constantly focusing on three steps:
Read the bare provision of the Constitution at least 4-5 times. It will help you to understand the concepts. Try to interpret the meaning according to you. Then read the commentary to see whether your interpretation inclines with the correct interpretation or not. It will help you to understand the reasoning behind every provision and I would insist that it is an important step to be followed.
There are landmark decisions in constitutional law. You need to figure out those judgments and read all of them to get clarity over the concepts. You can even read the summary of all landmark judgments that would be enough, or you can take a book of Samarth Agarwal containing landmark judgments from all subjects, I use this book myself (Not a paid promotion).
After you have read all the landmark judgments, try to link them with the articles. If you can locate to which article this judgment is related you will be able to understand it better. Also, it is important to read relevant parts of judgment from an examination point of view. It is preferable to read the whole judgment, however, as you have to read a lot, therefore, it is suggested to read important part and avoid irrelevant part.
You might be wondering what relevant part of a judgment from an examination POV is. So, the relevant part includes facts, issues and ratio decidendi (reasoning of judgment). If you know these three things, it is more than enough for you.
Apart from reading landmark judgment, it is important to read other recent constitutional law cases that have been passed over 3 years from the date of examination. Each year the Supreme Court decides cases on constitutional interpretation containing a Constitution bench of five or more judges. So, for every judgment where a constitution bench is present, you should read the relevant part of that judgment. Also, it is advisable to prepare notes of these judgments in a one-page format containing relevant information as mentioned above. I provided an example through an image.
Jurisprudence is the most difficult subject because of the extreme wisdom it offers that is indigestible for people of our age group. We tend to see jurisprudence as a rote-learning subject. It is where the problem begins, we seem to just remember the facts and statements of thinkers by fitting them into a particular school. But the strategy I offer will help you not only understand jurisprudence but also help you gain clarity and avoid any confusion. The 3 steps you can take to prepare jurisprudence for CLAT PG are:
Apart from these 3 strategies, I will give you three tips to begin preparing for Jurisprudence:
Now, let’s move to the next section, where I will tell you about the strategy for other subjects.
Don’t underestimate other subjects and leave it depending on your preparation in core areas. You also need to prepare for these other subjects. It is a differentiator in getting good and top ranks. So, the other subjects includes Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, and Labour & Industrial Law.
Some subjects are static whereas other subjects constantly change. So, figure out those subjects and prepare accordingly.
Read all the concepts and landmark judgments of static subjects. These include Administrative Law, Public International Law, Law of Contract, Property Law, Environmental law, Torts and Family Law. You may rarely see any development in these subjects. So, these are called static subjects. It is easy to score good marks from static areas. However, you must keep in mind that, concept are static but question may be related to current events on that static concepts. You answering ability depends on the clarity of concept. So, read the concept thoroughly, you will be able to relate it to any current topic.
It contains those subjects which constantly change, for example Company Law, Tax Law, Labour Law, and Criminal Law. For the betterment of society, constant changes in these laws are necessary. For these subjects, you need to track the changes from the previous regiment. Mostly, questions are asked about changes.
Now, let’s move to time management in the next section.
Law college is itself very hectic if you study thoroughly. Many studious students are left with questions about time management. Time management can be done with little effort in building a routine as I already discussed in the preliminary section. As the famous saying from the Viktor Frankel Book, If you know the why, you will figure out the how.
The appropriate time for preparation for the CLAT PG examination depends on person to person. However, a person of average speed would require at least six months of preparation. However, a person who is constantly up-to-dated in the legal field can do it in 1-2 months. Please do not take lightly after listening 1 month time period, start preparing as early as possible.
During your preparation journey, you might feel the burden of getting a good rank or you might feel that you are not good enough to get a decent rank for getting your dream college or dream job. You might attempt a mock and get lower marks which may shatter your confidence and motivation for taking the exam. One thing you need to keep in mind is that results are not in your control, but the preparation is. Doing the controllable and avoiding the unnecessary thoughts about things which are not in your control is the best way to move forward.
You need to trust yourself, and your gut feeling. You might get so low during preparation that you start to think about skipping the exam. One thing you always need to keep in mind is that you should not think about performance and live under the pressure of it. If one door closes, destiny has other plans for you. Believe yourself and do your best.
