Object

An Act to consolidate and amend the provisions relating to offences and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Seventy-fourth Year of the Republic of India as follows:––

Object, Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Act No. 45 of 2023.

The Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) Comments

The BNS was enacted to replace the centuries-long Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860. The main idea behind replacing the older regime was to remove the colonial presence from criminal laws as stated by Home Minister Amit Shah in his Parliamentary speech during presenting three new criminal laws.

The BNS provides community service as a form of punishment for the first time. Some offences have been made gender neutral. Some new offences are also added in new BNS such as offence related to organised crime and terrorist act.
